User Interface Performance Criteria for Web Designers and Front-End Developers

The basics. There are several performance-related issues that most likely are already known to all designers and front-end developers. These include recommendations for: performing the minimum possible number of requests; image optimization; Placing stylesheets directly in the source document, and more precisely in its element; the location of the scripts to the closing tag of the body of the document; minimizing javascript and css code; etc. Observing these basic principles you will already be on the right path to increasing the speed of interaction with your users, however, this is not all, not all. Be creative, it will allow you to create better sites.

A person is an elementary concept used in designing a user interface and achieving the required level of usability, which is a description of a typical user entering the target audience of your resource. Despite the fact that the person is a fictional representation of the user, the data used to create it is quite real. That is, this is a model that should be as close as possible to the real potential user. A scenario is nothing more than a “story” about the movements the user makes and the actions he takes during interaction with your application or site. In other words, using such scenarios, the behavioral features of the user of your resource are described, that is, the intended sequences of his actions and their motivation, the capabilities of the user, and the goals pursued by him. The scenarios describe everyday situations, thus showing to what extent the application or site meets the current needs of users in the person’s image, what appeals to them, how they use it, why they continue to do it, and so on. Together, these two design tools allow you to design situations and their environment, in which someone uses your site. And this in turn helps to identify problems and opportunities that need attention. Continue reading

Typography for web

There are many books and articles on typography, but only some of them reveal the choice and combination of fonts. Due to the emerging opportunities and prospects for free use of many fonts on the Internet, designers will have to master another important skill – the ability to choose the appropriate fonts that complement the layout designs they develop. You can also study popular typography trends or ready-made beautiful examples from other professionals.

Until now, the use of fonts other than those installed with the operating system has meant using images, flash or other workarounds. However, the creators of browsers gave map designers a hand by introducing the @ font-face CSS property, which allows you to register a link to any font file, as a result of which it will be used on the pages of the site.
